Chez TJ is a contemporary French cuisine restaurant that is uniquely located in one of the most historic Victorian homes in Mountain View, CA. Originally built in 1894, the structure was home to Julius and his wife, Fanny Weilheimer. Julius was a Vice President of the Mountain View Farmer’s and Merchant’s Bank as well as a member of the town City Council and, later, the town’s Mayor. The home has had many roles in its storied history: in the most recent iteration, George Aviet and Thomas J. McCombie acquired the property in the early 1980’s, opening as the restaurant Chez TJ and serving their first dinner on November 26, 1982.
Thomas and George met at Thomas’ prior restaurant, Pear William, in Menlo Park, CA. Both dreamt of building a restaurant together and so, along with their wives, they were determined to turn their dreams into something real. Together with their vision and what resources they had managed to cobble together, they built their restaurant and the public came! The press reviews were glowing with Gourmet exclaiming that it was “worth a detour from San Francisco!” In the height of 1994 the unthinkable happened as Thomas passed away and so, in honor of Thomas’ memory and their longtime friendship, George continued with the restaurant on the same path as they had envisioned. Now, after celebrating our 40th anniversary, Chez TJ continues to be the bastion of French cuisine in the South Bay that helped establish San Francisco as America’s culinary capital.
Chez TJ has always cooked with the seasons, utilizing the very best ingredients at the peak of their vibrancy and drawing inspiration from the community garden that has helped shape Chez TJ’s cuisine over the last four decades. Even if you are not ready to join us for dinner quite yet, we welcome you to visit the garden set just behind our lovely patio. Upon arriving, you will find fresh herbs and various citrus trees, while different seasonal fruits and vegetables are rotated throughout the garden. Even though not all plants in the Chez TJ garden are California native, they thrive in the microclimates of California’s Bay Area and Chez TJ hopes that it inspires you to plant similar fruits, vegetables and herbs in your garden!
